TEXT: Cold and Steel: Stories from the High Frontier

Cut to black. Music continues.

TEXT: As part of the production of Cold and Steel, AEDF and U&IIB personnel were given personal cameras and told to record whatever they believed other Authority personnel should know about their lives and work. These are their stories.

Music fades, replaced by subtle humming of unseen machinery. A handheld device records a short, metallic hallway, marked by a yellow line across both walls, ending on a metal door of rounded courners. After following a few short steps, the camera spins one-eighty. The shot is centered on the face of Ian Maverick.

TEXT: Episode 3: Weapons.

SUBTITLE: Created by Engineer Ian Maverick.

MAVERICK: Hello, all. This is… Actually, you've probably uh, seen my name already. I'm thirty-two, been a member of the AEDF for about… Ten years now. Began as a uh, boarding engineer on the Antarctic base. I launched here a few years ago, right on time to miss the massive ice collapse that led to Operation Etemenanki.

The camera spins again, pointing to the door at the end of the hallway. After a brief struggle, the door opens, leading to a torpedo cache. One-meter long shells are lined on metal racks, continuing for a short distance. Eight total racks are visible, with at least three more visible to each side.

MAVERICK: Welcome to my house, heh. This is the explosive storage aboard the AEDFS Arcjet, guard ship on Orion's Belt. It's also where I spend most of my days, unless action inevitably calls me.
